The amount of job vacancies in the hospitality industry is falling in a positive development for the sector.
At the end of 2023, there were a total of 112,000 vacancies as reported by Restaurant. While still a fairly high number, this has fallen from the 147,000 reported at the end of 2022.
This is a significant fall in unemployment and burgeoning rise in people finding gainful employment in hospitality, as 35,000 people have found work in the sector in the past year.
When widening the scope and comparing this current vacancy figure to the pre-pandemic equivalent, it is clear there is still some way to go. Before the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, the figure was 89,000.
Hospitality has suffered insurmountable losses since the pandemic, and while by no means out of the woods, there are encouraging signs pointing to a strong recovery. The industry is one of extreme resilience, and is once again becoming a more attractive employment proposition for people.
