Essential Safety Kit

Essential Safety Kit

There is no substitute for safety when it comes to the correct and safe usage of LPG. We have compiled this checklist in line with LPG best practices to give you some guidance as to the essentials you need to know.

The following tools are essential for safe handling of cylinders:

  • Leak Detection Fluid – to check for leaks (and water to rinse and remove this after use).
  • Propane spanner – to tighten and loosen the cylinder valve.
  • Gloves and goggles – for safe handling and to minimise ‘cold burns’ from the LPG.
  • Emergency contact numbers – for the gas supplier and a trusted competent LPG Gas Safe engineer.

If you are using LPG you will also require the following:

  • Appropriate fire extinguishers and fire blankets for the appliances in use to extinguish fires and protect cylinders from explosion.
  • If transporting LPG cylinders, then there should be a 2kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher kept in the vehicle to tackle fires in the engine compartment and cab of the vehicle.
  • The relevant NCASS Gas Safety Checklist for the type if unit in use .e.g. vehicle, trailer, gazebo – completed at the start of the trading season, updated whenever there are changes to the set-up, renewed daily to ensure the set up remains safe in line with daily trading checks.
  • Suitable on and off procedures for the LPG set up as outlined in the gas safety checklist – NCASS recommend that the business has copies of the procedures to hand for staff to follow. See our new on/off procedure sheets (for gazebos, tents or marquees / for vehicles and trailers.
  • A Fire Risk Assessment that includes control measures and monitoring procedures for the safe use of LPG and an emergency plan and procedures for dealing with a gas related incident or fire. (NCASS have a template fire risk assessment for safe use of LPG and associated hazards, members can access it here)
  • Evidence that staff have been trained on the safe use of mobile LPG and can carry out the necessary set up and safety checks before commencing trading/on procedures and afterwards as part of closing checks/off procedures.
