DVLA Updates Requirements for Towing Trailers

The Government has updated the necessary requirements for towing trailers in Great Britain.

Those with a car driving licence obtained before 1^st January 1997:

• Can keep their existing entitlements to drive a vehicle with a trailer with a combined weight of 8.25 tonnes (until their licence expires at age 70)
• Can drive a minibus with a trailer weighing more than 750kg

Those with a lorry and bus licence obtained on or after 1^st January 1997:

• Are limited to trailers weighing up to 750kg if they hold a Category C (large goods vehicles) or D (buses) entitlement
• Must hold a Category C+E (large goods vehicles with trailers) or D+E (buses with trailers) to tow trailers weighing more than this

Those with a car driving licence issued on or after 1^st January 1997:

• Must pass an extra driving test to get entitlement to drive certain categories

However, since 16^th December 2021, those individuals automatically have a Category B+E (cars with trailers) entitlement and can drive a car with a trailer.
