The nations favourite food has been chosen…and some results are hard to swallow

by Sophie Haigh | Read time: 3 minutes | Jun 17, 2019

Britons have taken to social media to debate the results of a YouGov survey, which saw Yorkshire pudding and fish and chips top the charts of a ‘favourite British cuisine’ poll after receiving over 80% of the votes. Scotch eggs and black pudding meanwhile sat at the bottom of the table.

The survey, carried out in a bid to prove that Brits are still very much in love with their national cuisine, revealed that 91% of Britons enjoy the traditional grub of their homeland, despite the criticism that our beige concoction of national dishes often receive from our neighbours over on the continent.

The full English, bacon sarnie, and most surprisingly, crumpet, were positioned in the ‘God Tier,’ receiving the highest accolade that one could bestow on a dish. In addition, winter warmers including bangers and mash, cottage pie and shepherd’s pie sat comfortably in the Top Tier category with 70-79% of the votes.

Controversially, haggis and black pudding feature in the ‘Crap Tier,’ with under 50% of the votes – a surprising verdict given how tasty these culinary delights are!

Jellied Eeels on the other hand, a staple food of East London was only enjoyed by a mere 6% of those surveyed, a result that American actor, Will Smith, will welcome after begrudgingly sampling the British delicacy earlier in the year in an episode of ‘Snack Wars.’

The results also found that men are significantly more likely than women to enjoy steak and kidney pudding (63% versus 47%), black pudding (56% versus 62%) and steak and kidney pie (58% versus 40%). Women however specified a higher appreciation of Sunday dinner staple cauliflower cheese (76% versus 62%).

Unsurprisingly, scones and Victoria sponge made the ‘God Tier’ in the sweet options, with hot cross buns, sticky toffee pudding, Eton mess and Bakewell tart hitting the top tier. Another blow was delivered to the Scots following the haggis debacle as deep-fried Mars bars were rated the lowest of the low in the puddings category.

Despite the heated discussions that have been had online surrounding the league table, it’s positive to learn that there is still a big market for British home comforts. We’ve witnessed firsthand the surge in popularity that the food of Blighty has enjoyed over the past few years, with classics such as the chip butty, cheese on toast, fish and chips, beef brisket and sandwiches undergoing successful reinventions by caterers adamant on reigniting a passion for the food so many of us grew up with in Britain. Happily for us, British food is back in business and here to stay!

If you’re thinking of setting up in the street food business and want more advice on which cuisine to serve, the NCASS team are on hand to help. For more information, call our friendly team on 0121 603 2524.
