According to data published by Barclaycard, non-essential consumer spending saw the biggest spike since October 2016 during England’s first match of the 2018 World Cup.

Barclaycard oversees almost half of the UK’s card transactions, and reports that overall pub spending rose by 9.5% last month. Overall consumer spending grew 5.1% year-on-year, maintaining the level seen throughout May.

Esme Harwood, director at Barclaycard said: “Consumer spending maintained its strong growth for the second month in a row. As the warm weather continues and World Cup fever sets in, it’s clear many households are prioritising fun in the sun while making the most of the summer’s best experiences.

“While some lingering caution remains, confidence in household finances is at a 12-month high. This may be good news for retailers, especially as many shoppers are keen to use their spending power to help their local high street.”

The data also showed a 9.7% increase in restaurant sales and a 10.5% rise in sales at garden centres due to recent warm weather.
