StreetDots secures funding to extend its network of pitches UK-wide

StreetDots

StreetDots, a platform that allows mobile caterers to book pitches a day at a time through an app, has secured £0.5million in funding to expand its network from 50 to 200 locations UK wide.

StreetDots, co-founded by street food entrepreneur Atholl Milton, works with private and public land owners to open pitches or ‘dots’ that can be booked via Trade Smart, its booking app that takes care of compliance, licensing and marketing.

StreetDots will use the cash injection to expand its network outside of London and Glasgow and increase its database of traders.

Milton said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many traders benefit from our dots, particularly those who are just starting out. We are now set to take our network UK-wide as we continue our mission to make it easy for anyone, from the smallest stall to the largest restaurant brand, to take their food to the streets.”

Funding

The funding comes from private Singapore fund B.O.H Pte in addition to its £350,000 initial investment in StreetDots in January this year. StreetDots has over 300 independent street food businesses on its database, including Kokodoo, whose two trucks selling premium Asian cuisine have been trading on the StreetDots network since October 2016.

After Kokodoo’s owners Joseph and Mary Yoon branched out from their restaurant into street food, they were surprised at how difficult it was to find a pitch for their new catering truck. StreetDots however, offered a simple solution. “With most markets I kept calling up, getting stuck on a waiting list and told to keep checking,” said Joseph, “With Streetdots everything is done by smartphone, you can see it all in one place and book instantly.”

StreetDots will use the funding to add features to its Trade Smart booking app for traders and its StreetDots app for consumers. These will include services such as pre-ordering and click-and-collect to help street food vendors keep pace with the growing delivery market.

Street Food Revolutionaries

StreetDots was founded by Milton and retail designer Darren Callcott in 2014. At the time Milton was getting rave reviews for his street food truck selling South African dish ‘bunnychow’ yet was struggling to find a spot to park up and legally trade. The StreetDots story

StreetDots was founded in 2014 by food entrepreneur Atholl Milton and retail designer Darren Callcott to modernise the antiquated street trading sector with a single platform connecting traders, space and communities. Milton had launched a street food truck serving South African Dish ‘bunny chow’ that got rave reviews in the London press.

But instead of perfecting his cuisine, he was spending about 70 per cent of his time on the admin to find places to park up and sell, a process that was still languishing in an era of phone calls, paper trails and even faxes.
Atholl was venting to Darren about this over a coffee on London’s South Bank. On the way to the meeting the pair had passed two London institutions: Transport for London’s busking mats and the London bike hire scheme (today Santander bikes).

The idea for StreetDots was born - a network of pitches or ‘dots’ onto which traders could book using a one-stop technology platform. The idea was to reclaim the sector from bureaucracy and return it to the young businesses that enliven our communities. Today, StreetDots is used by over 300 independent brands as a hassle free platform to grow their businesses and reach new customers.
