Help a community café to reach its goal!

The Kitchen Logo

The Kitchen is a community cafe project in Margate run by The Thanet Iceberg Project. Using almost exclusively surplus food, the cafe aims to tackle the food waste problem in one of the most deprived areas of the UK by producing low cost, delicious meals for those who need them most.

The food will be sourced via Fareshare Kent and local food businesses. The café will operate a two-tier pricing system: a ‘need it’ and a ‘want it’, with the latter being a pay-it-forward price which ensures those who struggle to afford food can receive quality meals at a fraction of the price.

The café will also host a Community Fridge, from which local residents can access surplus food shared by local businesses and each other. The team behind the project want The Kitchen to be more than just a coffee shop; they want to create an environment for everyone to access the charitable work of the project, and for vulnerable residents to relax and socialise in a safe, welcoming space.

After having successfully secured an ideal property for the café, the team behind the project are currently crowdfunding to raise money to fire & soundproof ceilings, renovate & equip kitchen facilities to appropriate standards, repair the existing disabled toilet & add a fully accessible “wet room”, update windows & frontage to provide full disabled access and decorate upstairs & downstairs.

Want to help the project to get up and running?

The Kitchen is currently in need of quality kitchen equipment donations. In particular:

A cooker

7-burner gas hob

Combi oven

Vitamix blenders

Quality fridge and freezer

Along with this, sponsorship for the sanding and sealing of the wooden floor, or services donated by sign writers or electricians would also be very much appreciated by the team.
