Digbeth Dining Club announce street food battle

Birmingham’s street food pioneers, Digbeth Dining Club, have announced their BHX vs LDN event this week on social media.

To celebrate DDC’s sixth anniversary, the Midlands’ unstoppable street food collective has challenged London’s notorious KERB to what they’ve described as ‘the UK’s first ever street food showdown’. The two cities will showcase their very best food and drink traders for one night only on Saturday 11th August at Digbeth Arena, Birmingham.

With the likes of Original Patty Men, Bournville Waffle Co., Street Souvlaki and Wingmans headlining for the Birmingham crowd, London’s line up, featuring Only Jerkin’, Stakehaus, Smokin’ Lotus and Makatcha, will have their work cut out to prove themselves to the Digbeth regulars in this heavyweight bout.

In the BHX corner…

Digbeth Dining Club, one of the pioneers of the Birmingham street food scene, started in 2012 and has since won multiple awards and established itself as one of the city’s top food, music and entertainment events.

Traders headlining for DDC

Homeboys – serving up Asian street food for the Midlands masses in the form of belly pork, bao buns and katsu curry, the Nottingham natives are in the Birmingham corner.

Bournville Waffle Co. – serving fresh-baked Belgian waffles with wonderous toppings from cheesecake to Maltesers to strawberries & cream from their converted caravan, BWC are sure to pack a punch.

Original Patty Men
– the self-proclaimed patty pimps are pros on the battlefield and will step out of their Digbeth restaurant to fry up their aged longhorn beef patties with filthily-good toppings.

Buddha Belly – bringing real Thai food to the streets of Brum, with secret recipes passed through generations and packing an authentic Muay Thai Kick, Buddha Belly are sure to come out fighting.

Wingmans – before setting up a permanent restaurant in North London, the original purveyors of poultry were DDC regulars, and they’re heading back to the Midlands to knock out the opposition with their award-winning chicken wings.

Street Souvlaki – the DDC regulars serve up the very best Greek kebabs and halloumi fries, barbequed fresh before your eyes and certain to deliver a triumphant blow.

Urban Cheesecake – the team behind the #getdrooling philosophy are famed for their decadent homemade cheesecakes with limitless toppings, and they’re sure to beat their opposition to the punch.

Dim Sum Su – leading the Dim Sum revolution, the team work to put the finest, freshest steamed buns, spring rolls and savoury dumplings into the hands of their adoring fans and they’re certain to come out champions.

In the LDN corner…

KERB was founded in 2012 and quickly grew into six markets across London, demonstrating the very best of the capital’s street food. Now the brains behind the collective run an annual programme to develop raw talent called inKERBator and host regular KERB workshops to help others into the industry.

Only Jerkin’
– with jerk chicken, jerk fish fingers and jerk fries on the menu, Only Jerkin’ show that the best way to win is to stick to what you know and do it better than everyone else.

Makatcha – in their mission to revolutionise Indonesian cuisine, the street food heavyweights behind Makatcha barbeque delicious beef rendang, chicken satay and lemongrass chicken opor for hungry visitors at four different London locations.

Oli Babas – after launching their deep-fried halloumi strips in 2015, Oli Babas now draw crowds to Camden to share their meat-free Levantine cuisine with the masses.

Biffs Jack Shack – described as ‘filthy AF vegan junk food’, the Biff’s menu is full of big flavour and bad behaviour – certain not to go down without a fight.

– the warriors behind the British steak and chips that have been described as ‘truly exceptional’ by Lunchbreak London are ready to take the top spot with their straight-thinking take on the classics.

Bill or Beak – slow braised duck and pork in a Vietnamese dressing and Szechuan fried chicken burgers with Miso mayo top the menu for Bill or Beak – question is, which is the winning dish?

Luxury Flats – the chefs behind this KERB regular serve up Ararat flatbreads with Koji fried chicken or Edamame falafel, taking traditional Asian flavours and blowing the minds of London’s street food fans – chances are, they’ll win over the Birmingham crowd too.

Smokin’ Lotus – described as ‘one woman’s obsession with fire, meat and precision BBQ’, Smokin’ Lotus’ menu of Asian BBQ is the final hero lined up for the London side.
