A Plastic Planet launch new ‘Plastic Free’ logo

Plastic free logo

Environmental group A Plastic Planet have designed a logo to be printed on all products with 99% plastic-free packaging.

The group, launched in January 2017, is targeting packaging in the food and drink industry in order to reduce the use of plastics which cause irreparable damage to the natural environment.

So far, retailers Iceland and Ekoplaza and tea brand Teapigs have decided to use the logo on their products. Iceland have specified that the logo will be used on its private label range over the coming months, after announcing in January this year that they would remove all plastic packaging from their own-brand products by 2023.

The logo is free for use by manufacturers, providing the packaging has a less than 1% plastic content. A spokesperson for the campaign explained that this was, “to allow for tiny amounts of plastics found in glues, labels and colourings.”

Ekoplaza, the biggest organic retailer in the Netherlands, launched a plastic-free aisle in its supermarkets this year. The company have signed up in order to give customers “an easy choice” when shopping for plastic-free food products.

Teapigs, launched in 2006, use teabags made from corn-starch and wood pulp-based Natureflex, without the need for synthetic polypropylene, commonly found in teabags. This ensures the product is compostable. The company have agreed to print the logo on the front of their packaging to, “inform and empower consumers to make plastic-free choices.”
