Food bank use to rise in December

According to The Trussell Trust, food banks in the UK are bracing themselves for their busiest December in recent years.
In the UK, more than 14 million people are currently living in poverty, including 4.5 million children. Between April 2018 and March 2019, food banks within The Trussell Trust network provided a record 1.6 million food supplies to people in crisis, a 19% increase on the previous year.

Data released on the 27th November revealed that December 2018 was the busiest for all food banks last year. 186,185 three-day emergency food parcels were provided by food banks in the Trussell Trust’s network to people in crisis; 78,536 of these went to children. This is 44% higher than the monthly average for the 2018-19 financial year.

This year, we will be taking our food and toiletry donations to both the Birmingham Central and Acocks Green food bank and with The Trussell Trust alone operating over 1200 food banks, we would encourage you to find your local food bank or drop off point (at supermarkets throughout the UK and donate whatever you can this Christmas as these food banks rely solely on goodwill. Simply head to to look at the different ways you can give to those living in poverty in your community this Christmas.

If you’re local to our Birmingham HQ and would like to drop off a donation at our offices for the Birmingham Central or Acocks Green centres, then please email us at
