8th Plate - back by popular demand

In 2015 NCASS members managed to salvage 23 tonnes of usable perishable food at seven music festivals and helped to divert it to people living in ‘food poverty’. In all, 55,000 meals were created for people living in sheltered accommodation and for those relying on food banks and soup kitchens. With one in eight people in the world living in food poverty, 8th plate was established in an endeavour to raise awareness about food poverty and to show how food waste could effectively work to reduce the issue.

Initially funded By WRAP and the Esme Fairbairn Foundation, the 8th plate project was an initiative between ‘A Greener Festival’, Fareshare and NCASS and only had sufficient funding for one year. However, almost as soon as the scheme came to an end, we were awash with enquiries from NCASS members – all of whom wanted to know why the scheme had stopped, especially in light of its success and philanthropic intent.
