Catering professionals experiencing burnout due to work

by Sophie Haigh | Jan 21, 2020
A new study from CV-Library has found that four in ten (44.4%) catering professionals admit they’re on the brink of a burnout, with 60% stating the work is the main contributor.

Of the 2,000+ UK catering professionals surveyed, some 48.1% reported feeling exhausted, 37% have trouble sleeping and 29.6% suffer from negative thoughts. When asked what causes them the most anxiety at work, respondents cited the following:

  1. An excessively high workload – 42.3%
  2. Pressure from their manager – 34.6%
  3. Demanding colleagues – 34.6%
  4. Having to work long hours – 19.2%
  5. Meeting unrealistic targets – 19.2%
To add to that, two-thirds (63%) of professionals in the industry worry about letting their team down if they’re unwell, with 59.3% fearing they’re disappointing their employer.

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, comments: “While some professionals thrive on keeping busy, it shouldn’t get to a point where they’re taking work home with them, struggling to sleep or constantly feeling exhausted; and as an employer, you have a duty of care towards your team.

“Be sure to create an open channel of communication so employees know they can come to you with any concerns they may have about their workload. Nowadays, addressing mental health and prioritising the wellbeing of employees is crucial for organisations; particularly when it comes to attracting, recruiting and retaining the best workers.”

It’s inevitable that we’ll all experience periods of both good and bad mental health but there are certain steps you can take as a business owner to facilitate mental wellbeing in your employees.
