From Meat Raves to Food Halls: The Street Food Revolution a Decade on

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

Street food has become a global phenomenon, having grown from clandestine parties in car parks to big business with food halls in prime locations. It has disrupted the food industry and mobile catering; but what next? Find out what NCASS have been doing to support and cultivate the industry and how demonstrating professionalism could unlock new opportunities. Throughout the discussion, we’ll also be introducing attendees to the street food alliance.

SPEAKERS

We’ve invited founder members of the Street Food Alliance to demonstrate what the Alliance can do for you. Read more about them below.

Manjit Kaur and Michael Jameson set up street food business Manjit's Kitchen in 2010, with just £200. They started their journey cooking in a domestic kitchen before acquiring their now extremely recognisable yellow horsebox which has seen them cater at large music festivals, weddings and farmers markets to name but a few. In 2016, Manjit established a café bar within Leeds’ Kirkgate Market and in 2018, the business exceeded its £40,000 Crowdfunding target to open a second fixed-site in Leeds. 2018 also saw Manjit’s Kitchen crowned Best Street Food/Take away at the BBC Food and Farming Awards.

Starting out as a street food trader operating at his local community market in Levenshulme, Manchester 5 years ago, Jason now runs GRUB which is one of the premier street food events in the UK, alongside their permanent events space Fairfield Social Club. The primary goal of GRUB has always been to support the community benefits of any market by reducing the barriers to entry for passionate chefs that have a genuine contribution to be made to the food landscape of Manchester. GRUB is fiercely independent and only works with street food chefs rather than macro brands or restaurants. GRUB’s offering has always been inclusive and every effort is made to provide the highest quality food and drink at affordable prices.

Just six years ago, Rob began trading with Bleecker Burger before commencing his career with KERB, one of London’s most innovative street food businesses. KERB was founded in 2012 by Petra Barran, and the company now has a membership base of over 100 traders. Since KERB’s inception, the food offering on London’s streets has vastly improved, and the company has worked tirelessly to help legitimise the industry and to nurture a community of food entrepreneurs in London and throughout the UK.

Having worked in a range of roles from Market Manager to Head of Finance, Rob has now moved in to a customer facing role as Head of Membership, working with stakeholders across the capital in building opportunities and resources for KERB’s traders and those looking to get into the industry.

Mark oversees all of the sustainability initiatives undertaken by NCASS on behalf of our members. Mark worked on the Glastonbury Green Trader Awards for several years, during which time he arranged the first Sustainable Catering training course with the Sustainable Restaurant Association. He co-developed the first 8th Plate project which salvaged nearly 30 tonnes of food from seven festivals in 2015 with Claire O’Neil from ‘A Greener Festival’ and FareShare SW.

Mark also represents the catering industry at Powerful Thinking and ongoing work in support of A Greener Festival. In 2018, Mark re-launched a new version of 8th plate aimed at making food salvage more affordable and practical. After successful trials, it will launch at around 20 festivals this year with the aim of embedding food salvage into event catering.
