Things have changed at NCASS since it all kicked off back in 1987.


The last 20 years have been pretty exciting for the NCASS team, with lots of twists, turns and changes; all for the sake of changing the shape and quality of the catering sector for the better.

2016

  • We’re about to launch online risk assessments for fire safety and health and safety, so you can keep your systems up to date every time a process changes

  • Won the Business category in the Primary Authority Awards 2016 for outstanding commitment to caterers

  • The Food Standards Agency recommended that food safety officers use NCASS Connect to better manage safety inspections for mobile caterers

  • The Primary Authority NCASS Inspection Plan went live, helping to reduce over-inspection for members

  • 206 NCASS members earnt over £25k between them during the first period of the new and exclusive NCASS-Booker Wholesale cashback scheme

  • The all new and updated online Health & Safety Training for Caterers course launched

  • The NCASS Training dashboard underwent a massive overhaul, making it much more user-friendly



2015

  • Launched online food safety risk assessments, revolutionising the industry’s approach to HACCP

  • Secured our best deal in catering insurance for members

  • Signed up 350 food safety teams, 300 event organisers and 240 local authorities to NCASS Connect

  • Formed further Primary Authority partnerships; with West Yorkshire Fire Department for fire safety and with MiltonKeynes Council for trading standards

  • Totalled 45 NCASS-approved Gas Safe engineers on our ranks, making it easier for you to find a qualified engineer to work on your appliances

  • Launched online training course How to Start Up in Street Food in four languages

  • Launched NCASS Equipment to give caterers great prices on NCASS’s favourite kit

  • Sent out 1269 individual WorkOpps to help members find catering work

2014

  • Lobbied Government to uphold the exemption from inspection charges for mobile caterers saving individual businesses hundreds every year

  • Launched NCASS Connect to improve relationships between caterers, event organisers and enforcement teams and to reduce hygiene inspections

  • Sent out 1084 individual WorkOpps

  • Updated all online training course content

  • Made all online courses mobile compatible

  • WOMAD Festival made the move to only contract NCASS members for their entire catering concession

  • Launched Purple Guide to help organisers to run events safely and to further raise standards within the events industry as a whole

 

2013

  • Formed a Primary Authority partnership with Cherwell District Council so that NCASS members receive assured advice and guidance and can’t be asked by food safety officers to deviate from the NCASS standard for processes

  • Moved offices (from Bob’s garage!) to Kings Norton, Birmingham as the association continued to grow

  • Created and launched LPG Safety for Caterers online training

  • Celebrated having over 30k trainees complete NCASS training courses

  • Published the 2013 Market Report to outline trends in the catering industry

  • Welcomed NCASS’s 10,000th member to the association

2012

  • Wrote and published new gas safety guidelines for LPG installation in marquees and trailers to set the benchmark for the industry

  • Published the seventh edition of the Complete Guide to Profitable Catering

  • Worked with the Sustainability Restaurants Association to create and launch online Sustainability in Cateringtraining

   

   

2011

  • Received accreditation on all NCASS Training courses from City & Guilds

  • Wrote and launched online Fire Extinguisher Essentialstraining and the first Health & Safety Training for Caterers

  • Published the biggest edition of The Events Guide to date, with over 1,700 events listed

2010

  • Created HACCP and First Aid training for caterers

  • Relaunched the old Mobile & Outside Caterer magazine as Catering Quarterly

  • Celebrated training 10,000 people to train on NCASStraining.co.uk

   


    

2009

  • Added Level 3 Food Hygiene training to www.ncasstraining.co.uk; the first Level 3 course available online in the UK. 

2008

  • Published the first Mobile & Outside Catering Market Report, outlining the current trends in the market.

    

2007

  • Launched www.ncasstraining.co.uk; a dedicated site hosting training courses for caterers. We hosted just Level 1 & 2 Food Hygiene courses to begin with! .

2006

  • Created and published the Code of Practice for the design and manufacturing of mobile catering trailers and van conversions; a first in the industry, outlining the standard expected. 

  • Offered the first online hygiene training courses in the UK to help raise the standard of food hygiene for members.

2005

  • Went from being MOCA to NCASS (the Nationwide Caterers Association) in response to demand from caterers in other sectors outside of the mobile industry.

2002

  • MOCA started offering hygiene training courses to members to help increase the standards in the industry.

2001

  • Supported caterers during the foot & mouth outbreak. The disease had a disastrous effect on the industry; many shows and events were cancelled and caterers couldn't trade. 

2000

  • Acquired the Events Guide Book from Outdoor Events Publications. It provided details of over 800 events and event organisers. 

1999

  • Wrote and launched the first edition of Getting Started as a Mobile or Outside Caterer to help new starters get into the business. It was the first of its kind.

1997

  • Set up and hosted MOCEX at Donnington Exhibition Centre; the first exhibition for the mobile & outside catering industry. 
  • The magazine went colour!

1996

  • Wrote the first Code of Practice for Mobile Caterers, setting the standard for operating to ensure that members operate legally & safely.

1993

  • Launched the very first magazine for members to help increase awareness of topical issues.

1992

  • Introduced a log book scheme for mobile caterers (a.k.a. Europe's first Due Diligence system for the mobile caterers).
  • Supported 302 members.

1990

  • A youthful Bob Fox joined the business as Secretary.
  • Supported 103 members.

1989

  • Launched the first Yearbook and sent it to all of our members.
  • Supported just 54 members!

1987

MOCA - the Mobile and Outside Caterers Association is founded by a Committee with Roy Norris appointed as Chairman and John Barton as Secretary. It aimed to:

  • Have a voice on matters affecting members business

  • Provide a central source of general and technical advice

  • Exchange information about equipment, commodities & service

  • Learn about the many Shows & Events taking place throughout the UK

  • Take advantage of the Association's collective buying power to reduce costs

  • Meet with others & discuss latest developments & trends
